Find Help, Find Hope!

Am I Mexicana Enough?

Am I Mexicana enough?

As my broken Spanish tries so hard to form a fluid sentence that flows like a steady stream

Am I mexicana enough?

As my wavy hair tries to curl itself into tight beautiful ringlets that bounce when I walk

Am I mexicana enough?

As my fair skin that once tanned under the Mexican sun becomes lighter in this country

Am I mexicana enough?

As strangers tell me

“but you don’t look Mexican”
causing the identity that I am so proud of melt away with their empty words

Am I mexicana enough?

Am I mexicana enough?

Si, si soy.

TGQ

In this poem, I explain how I constantly try to prove my Mexican identity while residing in the U.S. For many first-generation immigrant Latinx youth, like me, this identity crisis often contributes to anxiety.
